Today’s 1st Infantry Division, famously known as the “Big Red One”, became the first division in the US Army on 8 June 1917 when it assembled in Hoboken, NJ, to fight in France in World War I. It has been on continuous active duty ever since. The 1st Infantry Division has participated in WWI, WWII, Vietnam, the Cold War, Desert Storm, the Balkans, Iraq and Afghanistan. This wine is a toast to the memory of the 13,500 Big Red One soldiers killed-in-action during combat operations since the Division was organized.
To commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the 1st Infantry Division, Steve Reynolds of Reynolds Family Winery in Napa Valley has produced a special blended red wine, which has its origins from each of the sixteen Napa Valley AVA’s, otherwise known as appellations. Each AVA represents a growing region in the Napa Valley. Steve and 15 other winemakers, one from each appellation, each bring at least one ton of their favorite cabernet, merlot, cabernet franc, petit verdot or malbec to one location and then all the winemakers experiment until they have the perfect blend. It’s simply called Appellations and is one of the more sought after wine bottlings coming out of Napa Valley. Normally this wine goes to the market at $100+, but for the 100th Anniversary of the 1st Infantry Division, Steve has reduced the price so that current and former Soldiers of the Division can purchase a bottle for $35 plus shipping and handling.
